The N1 postcode in London covers one of the capital's most recognisable patches of north-central terrain, stretching from the City fringe at Old Street up through Islington, Barnsbury and Canonbury, and brushing the eastern edge of Hoxton. It is a district defined less by a single high street than by a string of them, Upper Street, Essex Road, Camden Passage and Chapel Market each pulling in their own crowds of independent retailers, restaurants and weekend browsers.
Transport is a quiet superpower here. Angel sits on the Northern line's Bank branch, putting Moorgate and London Bridge within minutes; Highbury & Islington adds the Victoria line and the Overground; Old Street threads into the tech corridor at Silicon Roundabout; and Essex Road station handles the Great Northern line into Moorgate. For anyone working in the City, Shoreditch or the West End, N1 routinely shows up on
the shortlist.
The housing stock is a mix that explains a lot of the postcode's character. Georgian and early-Victorian terraces dominate the conservation areas around Barnsbury, Canonbury and Duncan Terrace, while warehouse conversions and newer canal side schemes line the Regent's Canal and the City Road basin. Garden squares, mansion blocks and ex-local-authority estates fill in around them, which is part of why N1's sold-price ranges stay unusually wide a converted studio off Essex Road and a five-bedroom townhouse on Thornhill Square can trade in the same week.
